Midwest Photography Workshops offers nine certificate programs. Completion of any of the programs will mean the photographer/artist has demonstrated a mastery of that particular discipline. Homework, exams, and the creation and presentation of a portfolio are among the minimum requirements toward the completion of a certificate. Each certificate has a core group of classes and workshops designed to provide the student with a complete and diverse educational experience pertaining to that particular certificate
If you wish to enroll in a certificate program, contact us at officemanager@midwest.photography or 248-471-7299 to set up an appointment for a Certificate Review. Plan to bring samples of your photographs and we will discuss where you are in photography; where you want to be; then design a path for you to get there.
Earning a certificate will demonstrate to a prospective client or employer, an ability to start and complete a large in-depth project. The resulting portfolio is an integral tool or proof that the photographer is capable of doing the job. Prior to enrollment, each student is given an assessment exam to quantify what they know. The results of this exam is used to customize an academic plan of how best to build upon what the talents and experiences the student already has and deliver the photographic education they need.
Upon completion of the classroom portion of the program, the assessment exam is re-administered to measure the progress achieved. Finally, an in-depth portfolio review is scheduled.
By enrolling and paying for a certificate program, the student will realize a significant savings in tuition as compared to enrolling in and paying for the same classes/workshops individually. The savings are listed with each program. Enrolling in four or more certificate programs will result in an even greater savings. Please contact the office for details if you are interested in four or more certificate programs.
All offerings in the 300 Series (Photo Safari) are exempt from any discount offered with the Certificate Program. This includes a 999 Directed Study Certificate.
Course # 101 Fundamentals of Photography is a prerequisite for all certificates and is not included in any program.

The core of eight classes toward the imaging certificate will provide the student with the basic skills necessary to photograph a portrait, landscape, close up/macro subjects and architecture. Students will utilize techniques like time exposures, advanced flash photography, filters, and computer manipulation programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, as well design, print and present the finished work in the form of a print portfolio or a “virtual” portfolio using display programs such as Microsoft Power Point or Show Pro Gold. See and understand the basics of art - in particular, photography - in the same manner in which seasoned photographers have developed skills and perhaps an artistic eye.
Along with guiding the student to envision and develop a personal style, completion of this certificate will provide information on what constitutes the industry standards, assisting the students to create or enhance their portfolio to become employable or put in a position that their portfolio can be exhibited publicly.
Course #603 can be substituted for any other #600 series workshop at the student’s discretion.

Neither the film shooter nor the digital photographer can expect to make a perfect exposure every time. This certificate will provide the photographer with the skills to lighten, darken, crop, clone, color balance and generally fix any photograph. Additionally, this certificate is necessary to teach photographers how to triage, organize and prepare the hundreds of images taken at an event such as a wedding, vacation, or other large-scale event.
The large number of images must be prepared for batch file processing. To open 300-500 images and adjust levels, curves color balance, sizing and sharpening would take about 5-10 minutes per image. 300 images times 5 minutes each is 25 hours of computer time. With batch file processing, the photographer will put all the images into one folder, prepare (fix) the first image, select run, go to bed and wake up the next morning with all the images fixed.
Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom can not do it all. Learn how to use plug-ins to enhance your post processing. Any photographer will need a web page to promote their work. Learn how to build and maintain a simple web page including acquiring a domain name and photo gallery.

Photographing weddings frequently provides the financial vehicle to purchase equipment needed for diverse assignments. A photographer’s reputation is only as good as the last assignment. Wedding photographers must keep abreast with the ever-changing briddal trends and styles, and must be skilled beyond taking the shots. They need to know the fundamentals of business, including sales, marketing, and presentation. The Wedding Photography Certificate can make it happen for your career.

Clients seldom need all their photographs taken in a studio setting. Photographers need to be versatile enough to shoot under any circumstance. Shooting on-location seldom has adequate or even high quality light. Photographers need to adapt to bad lighting and uncontrolled environments. Sports, wildlife and architecture photography challenge photographers and their equipment to the limits of their abilities. This certificate will provide the knowledge to get the shot and still capture maximum vibrancy and minimize noise and distortion. Even portrait photographers need to learn landscape and architecture composition techniques to take advantage of - or work around - their subject’s background.
