  • Milky Way and Night Sky Photo Safari on Beaver Island

  •      Join us for this five-evening - three-day photo safari to travel to Beaver Island (just off the coast of Charlevoix Michigan). The first evening (June 30 at 6:30PM) is a three-hour orientation at the MPW Wildbrook Campus to provide information about what equipment to bring, dark sky shooting etiquette and the techniques of using computer and cell phone apps to plan your shoot by knowing where in the sky the milky way will be and when there will be no light pollution from the moon. We will also provide the recipe of camera settings of shutter speeds, f/stops, ISO and lens selection to maximize your shoot. A light meal (bar-B-Que perhaps) is provided during both the orientation meeting and the follow up processing meeting a few weeks after our return.

The actual shooting begins on Beaver Island on Friday July 14, 15, 16, 2023. The first night starts with dinner on the island then a sunset shoot leading to a milky way shoot (weather permitting). Plan on taking a nap during the day as you will be up until 1:30-2:00AM shooting the Milky Way.  Sleep late the next day and students will meet for Lunch and an afternoon of Landscape photography. Beaver Island has lighthouses, marinas, beaches and wildlife photography opportunities.  The second night will be shooting more sunset and milky way photos from a different location; and if fortune smiles upon us, the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) will be included. (Weather Permitting). We will catch the last ferry or airplane to the mainland on Sunday July 16, 2023 and head back home to process our images.

Class size is limited to 12 students and travel, lodging and meals are not included to or from Beaver Island, but your lodging on the island is included. There is a car ferry and an airplane access to Beaver Island. Call (313) 804-9266 for details! Non-Shooting spouses are welcome to attend at no extra charge. Beaver Island is only 13 miles long, but has jet ski, ATV, Bicycle and kayack rentals available for the family members not wishing to join us for the photography. We have booked eight rooms on the island during the busiest part of their season. Meetup acknowledgments will not be provided until a deposit is placed upon the class.

We will have a Friday evening pre-trip student meet and greet to arrange car pooling and lodging. After we return, we will have a Friday evening post production (editing) session all included for students attending this photo safari.
